Kay not only lived a life marked by excellence, but also inspired excellence in others. She graduated valedictorian of Midwest City High School in 1955 and was inducted into the MCHS Wall of Fame in 2005. After receiving many honors and enjoying various activities and positions, she graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1959.
Kay then worked as a high school speech and English teacher in Chillicothe, Ill., and Buffalo, N.Y., before she and her husband moved to Idabel and opened Norris’ Department Store. In Idabel, Kay’s focus shifted to creating a wonderful home environment for her family, involving herself in her children’s activities and also serving her community.
She co-founded the McCurtain Community Players, directing many of their successful productions (“1776,” “Diary of Anne Frank,” “Music Man” and “Our Town”), served as president of the PTA, the IHS Booster Club, the ICC Women’s Golf Association, was a charter member of the Idabel Jaycee Janes and McCurtain Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Kay was asked to remain on board as the director of Heritage Hall, overseeing its day-to-day operations as well as creating and managing the decor for other areas in the athletic center including dressing rooms, coaches’ offices and public areas.
During this period, Kay also became a mentor and tutor for the athletic department allowing her to work directly with many student athletes, helping them adjust to college life and encouraging them to perform as well in the classroom as they did on the playing fields. For this incredible labor of love and volunteerism, Kay received the “Celebrate State” Award presented by Dr. James Halligan in 2002, the “Loyal and True” Award presented by President David Schmidly in 2006 and the title of “Momma Norris” by many of her beloved students.

As the apple of Kay’s eye, she regularly attended their activities and would plan special outings for each of them.

Kay and Bob would also make regular trips to visit their daughter, Kimberly, and son-in-law, Johnny Guerrero, in Orange County, Calif., staying near the ocean, which she loved so much.
