W.R. "Billy" Morgan, 1907 - 2005

     W. R. “Billy” Morgan, 98, Broken Bow, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2005 at McCurtain Manor Nursing Home, Broken Bow. He was born June 1, 1907 at Fletcher, OK, the son of William Reedy Morgan Sr. and Lena Rinnert Morgan.
     Billy was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC). He served during WWII in the Navy Seabees (CB’s) as Chief Carpenter’s Mate. He was a member of the Broken Bow Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He was a 32nd degree Mason and had been a member for 50 years. He enjoyed woodworking and cooking. He was a member of 1st Presbyterian Church, Broken Bow. Billy was the first Broken Bow Savage Quarterback playing from 1924-1926. He originated the name for the team, designed the original logo and the school colors. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-granddaughter.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lena Morgan; wife Jackie Morgan; son, Teddy Morgan; several brothers and sisters, and one great-grand-daughter.
     He leaves to cherish his memory his two granddaughters, Valerie and Carl Duncan, Antlers, OK, and Terri and David Lanier, Calhoun, LA; three great-grandchildren, Bryant Duncan, Antlers, OK, Sheila and Eric Routon, Soper, OK, and Clint Kellogg, Calhoun, LA; one great-great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Blanchard, Vancouver, WA.
     Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 31, 2005 at 1st Presbyterian Church, Broken Bow. Interment will follow at Hochatown Cemetery.
     The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, December 30, 2005 at the Brumley Funeral Home Chapel, Broken Bow.

Alice Edge, 1920 - 2005

     Alice Edge, 85, passed away December 28, 2005 in Idabel, Oklahoma. She was born on February 6, 1920 in Garvin, Oklahoma to Robert and Martha Ives.
     Alice spent her life serving McCurtain County. She drove a school bus, worked in the lunch room at the Idabel High School, and helped hold elections. She was retired a county clerk and most recently worked in the county treasurer’s office.
     Alice was a member of the First Baptist Church of Idabel. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, gardening, and sharing flowers and vegetables with her family and friends.
     Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Rupert Edge, in 1979; her parents; one daughter, Janice Edge, in 1958; two sisters, Edna Willis, in 2004, and Mildred Belt, in 1995.
     Alice is survived by one son, Erv Edge; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Rosemary and Doug Pillow, and Kathy and Jeff Lee; one sister, Wilma Woodall; and five grandchildren, Chris Edge and wife Terri, Bradley Pillow and wife Laurie, Robert Pillow, Justin Lee, and Jon Lee.
     Services will be at 10:00 Saturday morning, December 31, at the First Baptist Church in Idabel with Brother Blake Gideon officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
     Visitation is scheduled with the family on Friday, December 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
     As a gift of remembrance to Alice, the family requests that donations be made to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or Oklahoma Baptist Children’s Home.

Christine Griffin, 1912 - 2005

     Christine Pardue Griffin, 93, died peacefully in her home in Idabel on December 26, 2005.
     Christine was born in Maud, TX on August 3, 1912 to Ezra and Nina Sanders Pardue. Though raised primarily in Maud, she visited relatives in Idabel often. During one of those visits, she met Ralph Griffin on the steps of the First Baptist Church, and they were married in April 1934 until his death in 1959.
     Christine was a retired Deputy County Clerk for McCurtain County, having served under County Clerk James B. Ray for 27 years. After her retirement she became active with the McCurtain Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and donated more than 8900 hours of her service to this organization. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for 55 years, participating in women’s ministries, teaching Sunday School in the children’s department for 15 years, chaperoning and feeding children and youth groups, and singing in the choir for many years. She was also a member of the 1972 Woman’s Club and a charter member of the Idabel Country Club. She also worked as a poll worker for the County Election Board for 25 years.
     Christine was a devoted and attentive mother and grandmother, who often used her vacation time chaperoning school and church groups on trips whenever needed. She was the daughter of a farm family, and loved to work in her yard and grow things. Even after her health made it impossible for her to be outside, she loved to sit near her kitchen window where she could see and enjoy her beautiful back yard and watch the birds and squirrels.
     Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, her parents, five brothers, and one sister. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, June Gadberry of Idabel, and a grandson, Chad Gadberry and wife Misty, of Bend, Oregon.
     Services for Christine will be 2:00 Thursday, December 29, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in Idabel with the Reverend Donna Dodson presiding. Interment will follow in Denison Cemetery.
     In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the McCurtain Memorial Auxiliary or to the First United Methodist Church of Idabel.

Beatrice Packwood, 1931 - 2005

     Beatrice Packwood, 73, Broken Bow, passed away Monday, December 26, 2005 at McCurtain Memorial Hospital, Idabel, OK. She was born December 28, 1931, at Clarksville, TX, the daughter of William Ervin and Este Owen Hunkapillar Ervin.
     She was a member of Charity Bible Baptist Church, Broken Bow, OK. She was an excellent seamstress. She loved to cook and raise kids. She loved people and people loved her.
     She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Este Ervin; one son, Bruce Wayne Packwood; two brothers, Herschel Ervin and Leonard Ervin; five sisters, Lucille Ervin, Lois Fryar, Margaret Osburn, Dora Kolaski, Flora Smith, her in-laws James L. Packwood and Leona Packwood.
     She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of fifty years, James W. Packwood of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Kay Walker, Houston, TX; Brian and Natalie Packwood, Wright City, OK; James and Cathy Packwood, Buckeye, AZ; Joe and Diane Packwood, Avondale, AZ; one daughter Susan Hill, Broken Bow, OK; one sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Gene Monkhouse, Negley, TX; nineteen grandchildren, twenty four great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Mattie Mae Markham, 1911 - 2005

     Mattie May Markham, 94, of Broken Bow, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2005 at the Broken Bow Nursing Home. She was born May 25, 1911, in Goldwait, TX, the daughter of Clarence and Margaret Cloud Benningfield.
     Mattie was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and she had been a resident of the Bethel community since 1931. She enjoyed quilting, traveling and spending time with family. Mattie especially loved her grandchildren.
     She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Earl Markham.
     Mattie leaves to cherish her memory six children, Alma Jo Mouton, Newton, TX; Ima Jean Smith, West Plains, MO; Billy and John Markham, both of Bethel; Linda Eversole and her husband Charles, Mena, AR and Kathy Ayres and her husband Rick, Broken Bow; one sister, Kathryn Whelply, Port Arthur, TX; thirteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, special friend, Gladys Rhoten, Bethel and host of many other friends.

Erma Baker, 1937 - 2005

     Erma P. Baker, 68, Idabel, passed away Friday, December 16, 2005 at Wilson N. Jones Hospital, Sherman, Texas. She was born April 30, 1937 at Idabel, the daughter of Issac and Lou Almeta Jackson.
     Erma was a commissioner for Idabel Housing Authority, member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and was a lifetime resident of McCurtain County. She loved spending time with her family and friends and working with housing authority.
     She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Baker Sr. and her father, Issac Jackson.
     She leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Almeta Jackson, Oklahoma City; two sons, Curtis Baker Jr. and wife Clotiel, Oklahoma City, and Johnny Baker, Tulsa; two daughters, Alma Baker and JoAnn Baker both of Idabel; one brother, Samuel Jackson and wife Joe Lee, San Diego, CA.; eight sisters, Alpha Goss and husband Cemon, Idabel, Bennie Johnston and husband Jerry, Emma Jackson and Carolyn Jackson all of Oklahoma City, Shirlene White and husband Stafford, Houston, TX., Barbara Brown, San Diego, CA., Ruthia Jackson, Dallas, TX., and Alma Cannon and husband Oscar, San Diego, CA.; three uncles, Olen Cole, Oakland, CA., Hardy Jackson, Idabel, and Roy Jackson, Fresno, CA.; three aunts, Martha Dale Boyce, Compton, CA., Verlee Doran, Sacramento, CA. and Augusta Butler, Fresno, CA.; seven grandchildren, Carlos Baker and Corey Baker both of Oklahoma City, Eric Caldwell, Tulsa, Brandon Baker and Robert Baker both of Idabel, Michael Baker, Oklahoma City and Shaun Baker, Texas and a host of nephews, cousins and friends.

Louis McBride, 1918 - 2005

     Louis McBride, 87, of Idabel, passed away Monday, December 19, 2005 at Idabel. He was born September 14, 1918 in rural Idabel.
     He was the youngest of 8 children born to Eugene and Lora Bell (Lingo) McBride. He married Miriam Hiner on April 28, 1939 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Kathleen Minter, 1929 - 2005

     Kathleen Minter, 76, of Idabel, passed away Monday, December 19, 2005 at Paris. She was born August 16, 1929 in Millerton, the daughter of Ernest and Susie Gardener Murphy.
     Kathleen along with her husband Clifton owned and operated Minter’s Grocery Store. After her husband’s death in 1969 she went to work for Kellwood Company and later as a cafeteria worker for the Idabel Public Schools. Mary Tisho, 1926 - 2005

     Mary Mae Tisho, 79, of Broken Bow, passed away Monday, December 19, 2005 at McCurtain Memorial Hospital, Idabel. She was born May 15, 1926, in Mt. Herman, OK, the daughter of Isaac and Lottie John Winship.
     Mary was affiliated with Tohwali Methodist Church at Oak Hill. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports and working in her yard. Mary also loved spending time with her family and friends.
     She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Lottie Winship; one son, John Dale Tisho; eight brothers and three sisters.
     Mary leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Newman Tisho Sr., Broken Bow; six sons, Kenneth Tisho and wife Sue, Shawnee, OK; Newman Tisho Jr. (Buck), Wendell “Wayne” Tisho, Lambert “Rusty” Tisho, Isaac “Wes” Tisho and Rico Tisho, all of Broken Bow; two daughters, Jeanetta Jackson and husband Richard and Kathy Thies, both of Broken Bow; seventeen grandchildren, Robbie, Allen, Crystal, Jim, Steven, Jay, Kyle, Kisha, Jerrod, R. Effie Scott, 1906 - 2005

     Effie Scott, 99, of Broken Bow, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2005 at Broken Bow. She was born March 13, 1906 in Bethel to John and Mary Belle McClain Moore.
     Effie was a homemaker, and enjoyed fishing and gardening. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was a lifetime resident of McCurtain County.
     She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ellis Scott; a son, John Scott; a granddaughter, Madonna Tadlock; and a grandson.
     Effie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Faye Scott of the Sherwood Community; a sister, Essie Utter of Medford, Oregon; sisters-in-law, Delora Moore of Broken Bow, and Bulah Moore of Roseburg, Oregon; 6 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
     Services will be Monday, December 19, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Conley-White Funeral Chapel in Broken Bow with Keith Lyons and Jesse Corcoran officiating. Interment will follow in the Sherwood Cemetery.

James Kegley, 1925 - 2005

     James Kegley, 80, of Tom, OK passed away December 16, 2005 in Texarkana, Texas. He was born on July 12, 1925 in Foreman, Arkansas to James Albert and Vivian Marie Kegley.
     James was an outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing. He always had a garden where he would raise flowers and vegetables. James had lived in Tom for approximately 45 years. He was employed in seismic exploration, he was a shipyard worker and he drove a truck for Foreman Cement where he retired after 25 years of service. He also attended First Baptist Church of Tom.
     James was preceded in death by his parents.
     He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Wanda Kegley, 1 son, James Virgle Kegley Jr. of Tom, OK, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia Ruth Kegley Patton and husband John of Texarkana, TX, and Rhonda Sue Kegley Pogue and husband James Melvin Pogue of Idabel, OK, 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Kegley and wife Ann of Foreman, AR, and Delbert Kegley and wife Paulette of Foreman, AR, 1 sister and brother-in-law Syble Kegley Dickerson and husband Fred of Foreman, AR, 4 grandchildren; Richard Vincent Beasley of Conroe, TX, Jennifer Russell of Texarkana, TX, Brian Whisenhunt of Texarkana, TX, and Miranda Pogue of Idabel, OK, 6 great-grandchildren, and many friends and loved ones.
     Services will be 11:00 Monday at First Baptist Church of Tom with Bob Posey and Brother Miles Wesner presiding. Interment will follow in Tom Cemetery.

Merle Thompson, 1918 - 2005

     Merle Thompson, 87, of the Harris community, joined her Savior on December 10, 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia while visiting her daughter.
     She was born in Redland, July 12, 1918, to Walter and Ada Crain. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She celebrated her life by serving God, and she never lost site of the good in everyone. She was the heart and soul of her home and family. She taught them love, courage, strength, and faith. Her love comforted all those whose lives she touched. Her inspiration and teachings will live on through her family and loved ones.
     Merle retired from Pioneer Natural Gas in Odessa, Texas, in 1982 after 25 years of service. She and her husband returned to the Harris community for retirement in 1985.
     She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Eldon Thompson.
     She is survived by her children: June Stephenson, Martha Heller, and Susie Morehead, grandchildren: Melody Manley, Gary Manley, Greg Heller, Eldon Heller, David Heller, Dolly Horob, Quentin Heller, Kelly Heller, Mandi Hardy, and Glenn Morehead, her sister-in-law, Melba Leatherbee, 14 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
     Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at 11:00 in the morning at the First Assembly of God Church in Haworth, OK with Aubrey Thompson and Keith Stanford officiating. Interment will follow at Redland Cemetery.
     Pallbearers will be David Heller, Eldon Heller, Gary Manley, Glenn Morehead, Mike Hardy, Joe Wright, and Charlie Ray Hudgins. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harrel Thompson, Ken Crain, and Harold Crain.

Leon Nesmith, 1931 - 2005

     Leon Nesmith, 74, of Bethel, passed away Friday, December 9, 2005, at his residence. He was born May 2, 1931, at McAlester, OK, the son of Roy McClellan and Lite Claremont Hamman Nesmith.
     Leon was affiliated with the Baptist faith. He enjoyed woodwork, walking in the woods, target shooting and reading.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lite Nesmith, brother, Tom Nesmith and sister-in-law, Jane Nesmith.
     Leon leaves to cherish his memory two brothers and sisters-in-law, Mack and Bonnie Nesmith, Idabel and Guy and Sue Nesmith, Bethel; three nieces, seven nephews, three great nieces and three great nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
     Services were at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 12, 2005, at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Bethel. Interment followed at Bethel Cemetery, Bethel. Rev. Ron Kellam officiated.

Shalonda Bendler

Shalonda Bendler, 1985 - 2005

     Shalonda Christine Bendler, 20, passed away December 5, 2005 in Haworth, Oklahoma. She was born on June 22, 1985 in Idabel, Oklahoma to Alford Dean Bendler and Wanda Sue Steaveson.
     Shalonda loved music, shopping, spending time with family and friends, especially her daughter Becka Sue. She had a big heart and was very outgoing. Shalonda attended the Church of Christ in Valliant and had lived in McCurtain County her entire lifetime.
     Shalonda was preceded in death by her grandfather, Charlie Calvin Steaveson.
     She is survived by her mother and step-father, Susie and Michael Ragsdale, father and step-mother, Dean and Barbara Bendler, daughter, Becka Sue Noah, 2 brothers, James L. Bendler and Charles P. Steaveson, 3 step-brothers, Paul Ragsdale, Larkin Ragsdale, and Randy Alexander, 2 step-sisters, Bonnie Ragsdale and Danielle, grandparents, Stella Steaveson and Burr and Allie Havins.
     Services will be 2:00 Saturday at the Norwood Funeral Chapel with Brother Tracy Mussett presiding. Interment will follow in Rockhill Cemetery.

Donna Leatherwood, 1958 - 2005

     Donna Leatherwood, 47, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2005 in Idabel. She was born October 29, 1958 to James and Geraldine Bacon in Midland, TX. Donna had lived in McCurtain County approximately 26 years and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Donna was also affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and shopping.
     She is preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Keston Brett McClure.
     Donna is survived by her loving husband, Robert Leatherwood, 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Shane and Keisha Martin, Benjamin Martin and Natalie Jones, daughter and son-in-law, Misty Martin and Joe Newsome, brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Sharada Bacon, 4 sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia and John Vrla, Vicki Tims and Jarrod Woods, Lisa and Greg Ammons, Jana and Dan Loose, 5 grandchildren, Kendalynn and Kyler McClure, Justice and Alexandria Martin, and Kandyce Newsome, numerous nieces, nephews, and special friend, Helen Lowrance.
     The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. December 8, 2005.
     Services for Donna will be 2:00 Friday, December 9, 2005 at the Norwood Funeral Chapel with Reverend Pat Beltzer presiding. Interment will follow at Denison Cemetery.

Harold Hess, 1919 - 2005

     Harold Hess, 86, of Garvin, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at McCurtain Memorial Hospital, Idabel. He was born June 24, 1919, in Arkansas, the son of David and Sabra Hess.
     Harold and Lomas Williamson were married July 27, 2001 in Wright City and was a retired Oklahoma Game Ranger. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served his country during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Garvin, were he served as a deacon and was a lifetime resident of McCurtain County. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Masonic Lodge, Idabel and Consistory in the McAlester Lodge, a cattleman, enjoyed bird hunting, deer hunting and loved spending time with his family.
     He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Hess; his parents and one brother, Doyle Hess.
     Harold leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Lomas Hess of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Dianne Hess, Austin, TX.; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Helen and Don Sands, Garvin; two brothers, Sam Hess, Idabel and David Hess, Ardmore, OK.; one sister, Lorene Starks, Oklahoma City, OK.; four grandchildren, Sabra Smallwood, Angolia, Jay Hess, Austin, TX., Jud Hess, Woodlands, TX.and Kay Wall, Broken Bow; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Doris Clark, Idabel, and Loris Gorden, Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Alvin Ray French, Idabel, Okla., Brian French, and Nathaniel French; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends; and a special love, Estoria Butler.
     A graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Friday, December 2, 2005 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Walter Cotton, officiating.

Darlene Hunter, 1934 - 2005

     Darlene M. Hunter, 71, passed away on November 29, 2005 in Idabel. She was born on July 20, 1934 in Topeka, Kansas to E.E. Stawitz and Marie Harp. She was a lifetime resident of Valliant, Oklahoma and was of the Pentecostal faith.
     Darlene is preceded in death by her father.
     She is survived by: Her husband, Don Hunter; 1 daughter, Tammy Hunter of Port Orchard, Washington; Her mother, Marie Harp of Topeka, Kansas; 2 step-daughters, Donna Hunter and Danny Hunter, both of Valliant, Oklahoma; 3 brothers; 6 grandchildren; 3 nieces; 2 great nieces; and other family and friends.
     Graveside Services will be 11:00 am Thursday, December 1, 2005 at Valliant Cemetery.

Paul Ragsdill, 1945 - 2005

     Paul “Rags” Ragsdill, 60, of Broken Bow, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2005 at his home. He was born October 2, 1945, in Rosalie, TX, the son of James Edward and Hattie Lee Bryson Ragsdill.
     Paul was a truck driver for over thirty years and liked to share his stories of being a truck driver. Paul always looked forward to spending time with his children and spoiling all his grandchildren. Paul loved his family and enjoyed holidays and reunions and other family get togethers with his family. Paul had a passion for the game of “Moon”, and was always ready and willing to put the dominos on the table for a game. He also loved to play cards. Until his illness Paul loved to sing on the Karaoke and dance the two step.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hattie “Big Mama” Ragsdill, and one grandson, Justin Stansbury, in 2002.
     Paul leaves to cherish his memory, friend and companion for fourteen years, Donna Tucker, Broken Bow; two sons, Paul Wayne Ragsdill, Jr. and his wife Laurie, Reno, NV, and Dakota Ragsdill, Rattan, OK; two daughters, Paula Stansbury and husband Chad, Wake Village, TX, and Renae Ragsdill, Rattan, OK; one stepson, Michael Jay Hobson and his wife Kelly; four brothers, twin brother, Jack Ragsdill and his wife Judy, Sherman, TX; Bill “Bubba” Ragsdill and his wife Mildred, Detroit, TX; Johnny Ragsdill and his wife Wanda, Bogata, TX, and Jimmy Ragsdill and his wife Jean, Waco, TX; three sisters, Nancy Bowden and her husband Gene, Rosalie, TX; Martha Freeman and her husband Joe, Watauga, TX, and Cornelia Stewart and her husband Paul, Winnsboro, TX; nine grandchildren, Anthony Wayne, Elizabeth, Shae, Ryan, Kallie, Amelia, Shalee, Kaitlyn, and Kaden; one great-grandson, Aden James; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends, John L. and Doris Webb, and his little companion, “Buddy”.
     Services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2005 at the First Baptist Church, Broken Bow. Interment will follow at the Crown Hill Cemetery, Broken Bow. Rev. B. G. Bowden and Rev. Eddie Slaton will officiate.
     The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at the Brumley Funeral Home Chapel, Broken Bow.
