Myrtle Bernice Tidwell, 1925 - 2005
Myrtle Bernice Tidwell, 80, Valliant, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2005, at Broken Bow Nursing, Broken Bow. She was born August 13, 1925 in Big Spring, TX., the daughter of Loney and Bertha Bunger.
She was a homemaker and a member of Valliant Church of Christ. She worked on the Ration Board during World War II and enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H.C. Tidwell, daughter, Pam Tidwell, and her parents, Loney and Bertha Bunger.
She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter and son-in-law, Angela Dawn and Justin Redman, Wright City; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary Don and Chris Tidwell, Valliant; three grandchildren, Shawn Maderer, Kathryn Tidwell, and Kole Tidwell.
Sevices will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at the Church of Christ, Valliant with Virgil Romine and Tracy Mussett officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2005 in Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at Brumley Funeral Home, Idabel.

Nathan Elliot Conner
Nathan Elliot Conner , infant son, of Phillip and Melonie Hughes Conner, Broken Bow, passed away on August 29, 2005 at OU Medical Center, Oklahoma City, OK. Nathan was born June 11, 2005 at Idabel, OK.
He was preceded in death by paternal great-grandmother, Billie Ruth Johnston, and paternal great-grandfather, Phil Conner.
Nathan leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Phillip and Melonie Hughes Conner, of the home; paternal grandparents, Steve and Karen Conner, Brownsboro, TX, maternal grandparents, Jay and Cheryl Hughes, Broken Bow; paternal great-grandfather, J.D. Johnston, and paternal great-grandparents, Clark and Lorraine Epperson, all of Brownsboro, TX; maternal great-grandparents, Joe and Martha Hughes, and Sam and Juanita Joiner, all of Broken Bow; two uncles and their spouses, James and Julia Conner and Randall and Kristina Conner, all of Brownsboro, TX.; one aunt, Ashley Hughes, Broken Bow; five cousins, Jordynn, Joshua, Jacob, Kaci, and Carson Conner.
Services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at the Lukfata Baptist Church, Lukfata. Rev. Paul Puckett will be officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Top Cemetery, Broken Bow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made at First State Bank, Broken Bow.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 30, 2005, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Brumley Chapel, Broken Bow.

Elizabeth Opal Collins, 1914 - 2005
Elizabeth Opal Collins, 90, passed away August 23, 2005 at Yukon. She was born November 22, 1914 in Matfield Green, Kansas to M.L. and Flo E. Herring. She married Euland L. “Red” Collins on August 13, 1934. They moved to Idabel in 1940 after Euland graduated from Oklahoma A and M (now Oklahoma State). They made their home here for over 50 years. Elizabeth was active in the First United Methodist Church, where she was taught Sunday School class and was in the choir. Elizabeth was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also worked at the State Welfare Department, retiring in 1977. Mrs. Collins was a wonderful wife and mother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved to cook and play Bridge.
She is survived by 2 sons and daughters-in-law; George Ed and Joyce Collins, and M.L. and Sheryl Collins; six grandchildren, Beth and Jeff Adams, Steve and Anne Collins, Norman and Linda Collins, Jill and Sean Faye, Chelsey Collins, and Chynna Collins; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, August 26, 2005 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Services will be Saturday, August 27, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Idabel. Interment will follow at Denison Cemetery.

Odis "Ode" Wheeler, 1923 - 2005
Odis "Ode" Wheeler, 81, of Valliant, OK, passed away August 21, 2005 in Hugo, OK. “Ode” was born November 1, 1923 in Valliant, OK, the son of Albert and Effie (Collins) Wheeler and had lived in the Valliant area all of his life. He married Maye Seymour on December 23, 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Rafael Wheeler and Vernon Wheeler and one sister; Addie Mahon.
He is survived by his wife, Maye Wheeler of the home; one daughter; Linda Chamness of Huntsville, AL, 2 sons; Billy Wheeler and Phillip Wheeler both of Valliant, OK, one brother; Palmer Wheeler of Choctaw, OK, 2 sisters; Lois Julian of Ardmore, OK and Nettie Slaton of Valliant, OK, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren along with numerous other relatives and friends.
Family will receive friends Tuesday August 23, 2005 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at the 1ST Baptist Church – Valliant, OK, with Rev. Mike Mings presiding. Interment will follow immediately at the Valliant Cemetary.

Ben Bruton, 1931 - 2005
Ben Bruton, 73, of Hugo, OK, passed away August 19, 2005 in Paris, TX. Ben was born September 9, 1931 in Tina, TX, the son of Ben and Mamie Bruton and had lived for the past year in Hugo moving here from Lakeside, CA where he had lived for over 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two siblings.
Ben enjoyed the cowboy life, roped calves, steers, bulldogged, team roped, produced rodeos, announced rodeos, produced the El Capitan Lakeside Rodeo for 40 years, four time winner of the IPRA rodeo of the Year, IPRA Gold Card Member, Reserve World Champion Team Roping Heeler in the IPRA and was the owner of the IPRA Bucking Horse of the Year.
He owned and operated Cowboy’s Corner Western Store in Lakeside, CA for 11 years. In 1987, he was Grand Marshal of the Lakeside Rodeo Parade. He was also a member of the El Capitan High School Hall of Fame by being honored with the Lakeside Citizen of the Year award.
He and his wife, Jody, were married on July 14, 1991 in Lake Tahoe, CA.
He is survived by his wife, Jody Bruton; one son, Michael Ben Bruton of Albuquerque, NM, three daughters, Diane Molina of San Francisco, CA, Sandra Kay Wheeler of San Diego, CA, and Frankie Totten of Albuquerque, NM; one sister, Jacque Crone of Yuma, Arizona, one brother, Pete Bruton of San Marcos, CA, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren along with numerous other relatives and friends, including special friends, Cheyenne and Doris Pipkin of Hugo.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at the First Baptist Church in Hugo, with Rev. Doug McClure presiding.

James E. Baker, 1924 - 2005
James E. Baker, 81, passed away yesterday morning, August 17, 2005 at Idabel. He was born on July 26, 1924 to Amos and Ora Baker in Tom, Oklahoma. James had lived in Tom his entire lifetime and was a member of the Church of Christ at Tom. He served on ASCS county board, McCurtain county Cattleman’s Association, and Tom School Board for many years. Mr. Baker was also on the rural water board and Farmers Union board. He was an honorary member of Haworth FFA, and served 15 years on McCurtain County Excise board. He was a supporter of the FHA for many years and was a member of the American Legion. He won Oklahoma Farm Family for the years 1958 and 1968.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, and 2 sisters.
James is survived by his wife, Sybil Baker of Tom; daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia and Paxson Smith of Oklahoma City, Susie and Bob Stephens of Stafford, Virginia, Patti and Greg Pyle of Durant, Joan and Mark Robinson of Peyton, Colorado, Virginia and Ken Lewis of Ada, and Sarah and Jeff Hicks of Edmond; sister-in-law, Maxine and husband Bobby Byrd; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a special nephew John and his wife Nelda Grant of Tom; special friends, Rick and Bonita England of Moon; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Services for Mr. Baker will be 2:00 pm Friday, August 19, 2005 at the Church of Christ in Tom. Interment will follow at Tom Cemetery.

William C. “Bill” Helms, 1920 - 2005
William C. “Bill” Helms, 84, passed away Saturday August 13, 2005 at Idabel. He was born to Lemuel Allen and Mammie Helms in Prescott, Arkansas on November 3, 1920. Bill had lived in McCurtain County for the past 33 years coming from Chicago. He was of the Bapitist faith and a member of the CCC. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. Bill worked several jobs including shoe repairman, truck driver, and machinist. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Alice; a daughter, Beverly; Sisters, Timmey Mae, and Aliene; brothers, Joe, Tom, and James.
He is survived by his son, William Calvin Helms, Jr., nieces and nephews, and a special friend Frances Deberry.
Services for Bill will be on Monday, August 15, 2005 at 2:00 at Norwood Chapel. Burial will follow at Denison Cemetary in Idabel.

Lonnie “Frosty” Gray, 1951 - 2005
Lonnie “Frosty” Gray, 53, of Idabel passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at Idabel. He was born August 14, 1951 in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Lonnie was a true cowboy at heart, and loved training and breaking horses, riding his wagon, and playing the guitar. He was a member of the Forest Hill Baptist Church and was a lifetime resident of McCurtain County.
Lonnie is survived by his father, Aubrey Alton Gray Sr. of Idabel; his mother, Bobbie Sue Smith of Idabel; sons, Duskin Earl Gray of New Boston, and John Justin Gray of Wright City; brothers, Donnie Alton Gray Sr. of Cloudy, Danny Gray of Idabel, and Randy Gray of Idabel; a sister, Karen Dodds of Idabel; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 13, 2005 at the Conley-White Chapel in Idabel. Interment will follow in Canfield Cemetery with Bro Thomas Cockerham officiating.
Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2005 at the funeral home.

Henry Gafford “Hank” Irby, 1927 - 2005
Henry Gafford “Hank” Irby, 78, of Idabel passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 3:00 pm after fighting lung cancer. He was a Veteran who served in the Navy during WWII and was a member of the American Legion Post 8 and VFW. He was a past Commander of Post 8 and District 3 Commander of American Legion, Department of Oklahoma. He was retired of PSO and lived in Idabel for the past 40 years. Mr. Irby coached Idabel baseball in the 70’s. Hank loved his country and was proud to be a veteran and a member of the American Legion. He was also on the Board of Trustees of the McCurtain County Veterans Memorial Museum.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Elsie Irby; 5 sisters; 3 brothers; and a wife, Grace Irby.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Irby of Idabel; sons, Lenox “Sandy” Irby of Kansas City, Missouri, and Mark Irby of Broken Bow, OK; daughter, Martha Lynn Irby of Sulphur Springs, TX; step daughters, Reba Buchovecky of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Sherri Booth of Miami, OK, Regina Johnson of Idabel, and Yevonne Kielty of Tulsa, OK; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be tomorrow, Friday August 12, 2005 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Services will be at Norwood Funeral Chapel on Main Street at 10:00 am Saturday August 13, 2005. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in Sulphur Springs.

Ernest Roy “Buck” Horn, 1937 - 2005
Ernest Roy “Buck” Horn, 68, passed away Thursday August 11, 2005 at Idabel. He was born in America, Oklahoma on July 3, 1937 to Robert and Pallie Horn. Ernest was of the Baptist faith and had lived his entire lifetime in McCurtain County.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Janetta Kemp; on grandchild, Chad Lee Kemp; one brother; and three sisters.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Henryetta Horn of Haworth; son, Bobby Horn of Haworth; brother, Mike Horn of Haworth; 6 sisters, Annie Alford of Haworth, Pat Billingsley of Idabel, Zerma George of Wicks, Arkansas, Kathy Provence of Haworth, Georgie Tunnell of Haworth, Sue Johnson of Haworth and Faye Proctor of Haworth; special nieces and nephews, Morris and Darlene, Brandon and Stephen England, Mickey, Felicia, and Daniel Tunnel, and Larry Ridge.
Services will be Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Haworth Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Blackland Cemetery.

Billie June Bray Rodgers, 1943 - 2005
Billie June Bray Rodgers, 62, left this life to meet her father and walk with him in heaven on August, 9 2005 at her home in Garvin. She was born June 10, 1943 at Hollycreek, the daughter of Jesse and Daphner Anderson Bray. Billie married George E. Rodgers in the Hollycreek Community on September 30, 1961.
Billie was a homemaker and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and raising a garden. She was a member of the Springs of Light Church and was a lifetime resident of McCurtain County.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, J.W. Bray and Richard Bray.
Billie leaves to cherish her memory her husband, George E. Rodgers of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, George Jr. and Jimmie Rodgers of Mt. Herman; daughters and son-in-law, Anita Rodgers, and Jessica and Joe Withers all of Garvin; grandchildren, Keene Rodgers, Kenon Rodgers, Cassie Rodgers, Katrina Rodgers, Shelena Rodgers, Hunter Withers, and Hayden Withers; a great-grandchild, Merrissa Rodgers; brothers,, Arnold Bray, and Clarence ”Peck” Bray both of Hollycreek; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Joe Ward of Hollycreek; many other relatives and a host of friends.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 12, 2005 at the Springs of Light Church in Glover. Interment will follow in Rock Hill Cemetery with Bro. Don Batchelor officiating.

Melvin Rogers, 1941 - 2005
Melvin Rogers, 64, of Idabel, passed away Monday, August 8, 2005 at Idabel. He was born February 4, 1941 in Ganado, Texas.
Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959 and he served aboard the USS Dixie, a U.S. Navy Construction Tender. He served in the Navy until 1963, he was a longtime employee of P.S.O. Melvin was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He had lived here since 1968 coming from Hugo. Melvin loved Broken Bow Lake and spent the last several years enjoying time on his houseboat with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Rose Rogers in 1997, and 2 brothers, Eddie Rogers in 1990, and Jim Rogers in 2005.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Peggy Rogers of Idabel; step-father, Earl Rogers of Hugo; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Tonya Rogers, and Greg Rogers all of McAlester; step-son and daughter-in-law, David and Solita Anderson of Idabel; step-daughter, Cassie Anderson and Roger of Idabel; brother, Bill Rogers of Hugo; grandchildren, MaKenna Ellyce Rogers, Garreth Rogers, and Torie Bree Ann Rogers all of Kiowa, OK, Hailey Rogers of Ortonville, MI, Lane Anderson, Alex Williams, and Ethan Williams all of Idabel; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Graveside Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 11, 2005 at Hochatown Cemetery with Rev Oscar Wilkie officiating.

Jennifer Freeman, 1980 - 2005
Jennifer Freeman, 25, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2005 at Nashville, Tennessee. She was born May 31, 1980 at DeQueen, Arkansas.
Jennifer was a photographer and enjoyed badminton and hackey sack. She was affiliated with the Pentecostal faith.
She is survived by her parents, Clark and Sherry Freeman, both of Broken Bow; son, Dakota Wayne Freeman of Columbia, Tennessee; daughter, Justice Sky Brown of Columbia, Tennessee; sisters, Shawnda Marie Hinson of Collinsville, Oklahoma, Cassondra Elaine Klinzing of Columbia, Tennessee, Cynthia Marlene McCormick of Portland, Oregon; nieces, Taylor Marie Hinson and Brandi Donne Hinson, both of Collinsville, Oklahoma, and Angelique Rayne Klinzing of Columbia, Tennessee; many other relatives and a host of friends.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at the Conley-White Chapel. Interment will follow in the Watson Memorial Cemetery in the Oak Hill community.
Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at the funeral home.
